NYE Style 2010

Canada's relationship with its national symbols is a complex one: as a profoundly unassuming and conciliatory people, the things that define who we are are subtler than they perhaps ought to be, but are nonetheless instantly recognizable artifacts of a shared or imagined past. Canada is a vast, often cold place. Its far-flung regions are connected by rivers, railways, telephones and now high-speed Internet. Fall in this country is the all-too-short season where Canadians prepare to hunker down, ride out the cold of winter with the help of plaid, wool and fur. This year's fall style is based on the symbols that connect us or keep us warm, that root us without making us immobile. —Bryan Birtles, Style Editor
