Issue #737: Climate Crossroads
Nirvana
Unlike past Courtney Love pre-Christmas cash grabs—anyone who
shelled out a hundred bucks for the unlistenable With the Lights Out box set
five years ago will understand—Live at Reading is a release worth
having. Showcasing Nirvana at the height of its power—nearly a year
after Nevermind was released and six months before the band would record In
Utero—the new DVD shows the band as a well-oiled machine, disregarding
a few slip-ups during what were then brand-new songs. With bands like Pissed
Jeans bringing that sludgy, Northwest US sound back to the forefront, Live at
Reading serves as a timely reminder that Nirvana did it first, did it best
and that, despite the way the group is sometimes shamefully grouped in with
bands like Korn and System of a Down on "Modern Rock Radio," there's a power
here unmatched by any band before or since.
