Jan. 13, 2010 - Issue #743: Broken Embraces
Music Notes
SUN, JAN 17 (7 pm)Guns N' Roses
With Sebastian Bach, Danko Jones
Rexall Place, $49.50 – $89.50
How many guitarists does it take to make four albums and an EP? Let's see: Izzy Stradlin, Slash, Tracii Guns, Richard Fortus, Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal, Paul Tobias, DJ Ashba, Robin Finck, Buckethead and Gilby Clarke (who, incidentally, was just in a hit-and-run accident when another vehicle hit his motorcycle. Don't worry Rockstar: Supernova fans: he's got a broken leg but he's going to be OK). Anyway, it took Guns N' Roses 10 guitar players to make it this far into its career. You can see three of those when the band lands in Edmonton.

SUN, JAN 17 (8 pm)
Lyle Lovett and his
Large Band
Jubilee Auditorium, $53.15 – $74.15
Not only has Lyle Lovett been creating amazing music since 1986, but throughout all that time he's had the best hair in the music business. It came through unscathed even after a close call on his uncle's farm in 2002 when a bull rammed him. Thankfully, Lovett was all right as well.
FRI, JAN 15 (7 pm)
Switchfoot
With Paper Tongues
Starlite Room, $21.50
Naming themselves after a surfing term, the members of Switchfoot continue to be consumed with the sport, so it's a little weird that the group's latest album was called Hello Hurricane, right? I mean, what could you possibly want less than a hurricane? It's like calling an EP Sharks Totally Love Us! Anyway, fans of the band can ask them what's up if they wait around after the show this Friday.
SAT, JAN 16 (7 pm)
Colin James
With Suzie McNeil
Francis Winspear Centre, $39.50 & $49.50
Some reviewers may have called Colin James' latest disc Rooftops and Satellites a "comeback" record but James himself might be more inclined to take a page out of LL Cool J's playbook and refer to it as a "don't call it a comeback record." A left turn from some of his big band type stuff, the album is nonetheless 100 percent James—the guy's always been a chameleon and he's always been with us. Don't call it a comeback.
