LEGAL SNAG DELAYS VUE WEEKLY SALE
by SEE Staff

Legal issues have stalled a bid by B.C. newspaper magnate David Black to buy VUE Weekly. The sale has not been closed, contrary to a report in SEE Magazine last week.

Black is negotiating the purchase of VUE from its owners, Maureen Fleming and Dan McLeod, publisher of Vancouver’s Georgia Straight. Last year, Fleming sold 50 per cent of the weekly to the Georgia Straight publisher. Neither Black not McLeod responded to requests for interviews last week.

But in e-mail correspondence with SEE this week, McLeod confirmed a deal for the sale of VUE is in the works and that there is some difficulty over conditions of the sale. He said legal issues had prevented the sale of VUE from going through.

McLeod said he and Fleming are "currently in dispute" over a clause in their shareholder agreement governing sale of the publication.

Fleming and Black, McLeod added, are considering legal action to force him to sell his shares in VUE.

McLeod did not elaborate, saying the matter "may soon be before the court."

Black did not respond to continued requests from SEE for an interview. .
