The short story is an overlooked and under-appreciated format in fiction, and the same could be said of the short play—especially with such a shining example as this. Ruminations of Maud is a set of five beautifully written and brilliantly performed theatric vignettes. Each one peers into the life of a person caught in a moment of painful transition. The scenes are simple yet richly layered and profound, and though the characters come from all walks of life, there is an unconscious unity between each of their stories. The only things keeping this show from being completely outstanding are a few badly-timed and ill-chosen elements of the sound design, as well as a couple choices in staging that didn’t quite work out.
