complicateded

The "party" roommate and the "responsible" roommate both fall for the same new girl. The problems with that, it turns out, are two-fold: one, neither realizes they're in love with the same lady (for a pretty contrived length of time, actually) and two, the responsible one is getting married at the end of the week. Like an episode of 5th Wheel channeled into sitcom structure, Complicateded doesn't really do much: it's plotting is predictable, there's plenty of tone-deaf leaps between comedy and the more serious matters (though there are some pretty funny lines, though not enough of them to salvage the rest), some uneven acting, and a really long runtime for what it is. The cast, two of whom also wrote/directed, seem like charming people, and the audience was certainly on their side, but this is pretty off the shelf stuff. Even for a first production, it's a little too wobbily to recommend.
