Eating Pasta off the Floor

Review

Maria Grazia Affinito’s one-woman show delves into the tricky dynamics of family politics with big-hearted honesty. Exploring the difficult bonds between mother and daughter, Affinito’s performance commands attention as she expertly shifts among myriad larger-than-life characters—from overbearing, embarrassing Italian momma to grocery store clerk to psych ward doctor. Eating Pasta achieves what most Fringe shows strive for: a careful balance between comedy and drama told with convincing charm. Like any authentic Italian meal, there’s a lot to digest here: Affinito packs an incredible number of stories into one show, leaving some curiously glossed over. Be warned, this autobiographical tale takes a dark and sombre twist, exploring war atrocities, sexual assault and domestic abuse, but does so in a way that finds beauty in the wreckage. —Megan Dart
