Bridget Ryan’s In Your Element

Review

She's the first to point out the irony, but Bridget Ryan found a new way of battling the disconnect that's part of our screen-based culture by, well, using the Internet. That's where she learned about the five elements of the Chinese zodiac—wood, water, fire, metal, earth—as different ways of looking at our personalities and understanding one another. As to how that fits into In Your Element: Ryan, the TV host/force of charisma leads us through the songs of the '80s as broken into those categorical types, as well as outlining their particular traits. Flanked by Bryce Kulak on keys and Owen Brierley on programming/beats, Ryan delivers a spirited musical revue that's rife with personality and good vibrations the whole way through. It's the only place you'll hear Tiffany segue into Iron Maiden maybe anywhere, and though Ryan points out early on in her set that there's no swearing in the show, it feels merited here: what a fucking delight. —Paul Blinov
