This year is the 20th anniversary of the Jasper in January festival.
Organizers are determined to make this the best one yet and it appears that
Mother Nature is going to help out as well. Last weekend I spent a couple
of days exploring the mountain and all I found was powder and more powder
with nary a patch of ice in sight. It was the best early January conditions
I’ve witnessed in years.
Aside from slopeside fun where cheap lift tickets rule the day, this year
the festival is taking it to the street with two street parties on January
17 and January 24. Street performers, ball hockey, ice sculpting and a
whole lot of good family fun are planned. The street party will feature a
life size foosball game where players are attached to long poles.
The nights will come alive as well with performers Tupelo Honey and
Mobadass rocking the Atha ‘B’ on the weekends and jam nights at
the Whistle Stop Pup where local musicians strum their stuff. On the dining
side you can partake in the annual chili cook-off, “Taste of the
Town,” cake decorating, skiers buffet at the Sawridge Inn and even an
Organic Wine & Food Pairing seminar where they’ll explain how a
real organic wine is made.
The Jasper Tourism web page at jaspercanadianrockies.com has the complete
list of activities on their events calendar. This year Jasper in January
takes place from January 17 to February 1. Besides cheap lifts, the hotels
have dramatically reduced their nightly rates as well and if you’re
comparing to summer prices they’re running at up to 50 per cent cuts so
don’t be afraid to pick a good one. V
