New Sounds: Matt Epp
safe or free

If you could judge an album on beard quality alone, troubadour Matt Epp's Safe or Free would be an instant classic. While the album doesn't quite achieve such lofty status, it is interesting, layered and vast in scope—though with tracks oscillating between uplifting spirituals about the life of Jesus ("Follow Me") and obsession-driven murder ballads ("They Won't Find the Bodies") and all points in between, the album ends up feeling a little too scattershot and eclectic, lacking an internal cohesion. Despite its thematic shortcomings, the album is worth a listen and shows that Epp can write, sing and grow some fine facial hair.
