Unearth

For its fourth full-length album, Unearth remains firmly
rooted in the metalcore genre from which it emerged a decade ago, laying down
a heavy-duty musical base of thrashing guitars beneath screaming
punk-inspired vocals. Unfortunately, the group brings little in the way of
freshness or unity to the music, the band’s abundant guitar leads often
treading over barely distinguishable ground and failing to take flight, and
many of the songs sounding like they were constructed piece by piece in the
rehearsal studio with too little regard for the whole. Still, there are
exceptions here: a guitar breakdown late in “Crow Killer” works
to elevate the song and the title track finds the band firing on all
cylinders in a vicious assault of distorted, industrial-weight grooving.
